Boas, Franz

   American anthropol-ogist. Born in Minden, Westphalia, he studied the Eskimos in Baffin Island. After teaching at Berlin University, he went to the US where he taught at Clark University, later becoming professor of anthropology at Columbia and in 1901 curator of the American Museum of Natural History. From 1908-25 he edited the Journal of American Folklore. Later he led a campaign against Nazi racism.
